Born from a struggle with quietude, "Observing Silence" explores the transfiguration power of silence as it becomes a wellspring for both artistic creation and spirituality. Black ink, chosen for its limitation, felt like the perfect encounter with form, silhouette and line. Its restriction of decision allowed an unfettered flow in the reigning in of the chaos found within extended silence. That overwhelming state that we often drown out with consumption and ambient noise. An initially grating experience became almost monastic as what always begins as a stream of consciousness falls into rhythmic prayer, and intentional blessing for any who receive the piece. As it was to watch my mother cook and pray quietly to herself, over the food, her family and who ever needed it - I found myself suddenly making in the same way.

Imbued with intentional intercession, the works might invite contemplation of one's own inner landscapes in the face of silence, but also offer an echo of unconditional affection to whoever stands before it. Not so different from a mother placing a bowl of food before her child. A bowl of food blessed, a child always prayed
