ORIGINS

ORIGINS by Bianca Valencia Criscuolo presents a meditation on the theological dimensions of making, positioning the studio as a site of spiritual inquiry where creation is not depicted but enacted. Rooted in the conviction that humans, fashioned in the divine image, are fundamentally called to create, this body of work evolved from biblical narratives spanning Genesis to Revelation.

Resisting the didacticism of traditional religious iconography, it embraces abstraction as a vehicle for discovery, her paintings becoming visual records of a search-traces of an artist working in collaboration with mystery. They are the echos of a soul walking through thought and process.

Drawing on the theology of making as written by her mentor Makoto Fujimura, she approaches the canvas not to communicate predetermined meaning but to participate in creation as an ongoing, generative act. Thus, participating in the Proverbs 25:2 paradox of seeking what has been concealed. The result is a body of work that refuses closure, instead inviting viewers into dimensional portals that collapse time into a physical visual sea to navigate, offering only a poem as a vessel of navigation. This invitation to co-creation is itself a mode of knowing the divine.

Proverbs 25:2: "It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out."

  • From the empty devouring maw of the dark sea

From the vast endless breathless empty

The eternal king exhaled the heavens forth

Where no thing dwelled, all came to be

It was in his song where death could not walk

and all was sweet with the taste of life

From his lips spilt the valleys rivers and seas

Off his breath floated trees, bees, and all that was green

He spoke such that it must be

The boughs laden with golden flowers; mirth bubbling

    from every spring.

From the law of his word we were meant to bow the knee

It is on the eve of rest I wish to return to dwell

for when the king of heaven spoke

All dark empty nothingness was dispelled
